Illuminata 18BE/RD is a compact, very broadband high-end floor-standing loudspeaker that contains a Scan-Speak woofer 18WU8741T00. We offer the kit in three different versions, which the magazine Hobby HiFi has developed. The versions differ in the tweeter, which you can choose from below: the excellent beryllium tweeter Scan-Speak D3004/664000, the ring radiator from the Illuminator series Scan-Speak R3004/662000 or the inexpensive ring radiator from the Discovery series Scan-Speak R2604/833000 The loudspeaker was developed by Bernd Timmermanns. The loudspeaker is designed with a closed housing and high-pass capacitor (GHP). The crossover consists of a 3rd order high-pass filter (18 dB/octave) for the tweeter dome or the ring radiator. A 2nd order low pass drives the woofer/midrange speaker. Two suction circuits smooth out the frequency response of the woofer/midrange speaker. A capacitor is also connected in series with the woofer. The frequency response of the loudspeaker is perfectly linear on axis between 50 Hz and 40,000 Hz. The decay spectrum is free of any interference. The non-linear distortions at medium volumes (90 dB, 1m) are below 0.25% above 300 Hz.
The high-end kit contains three Mundorf EVO silver-gold oil capacitors in series with the tweeter. Most of the coils are designed as baked varnish air coils. A Mundorf CFC foil coil is used in series with the woofer; both to reduce the microphonic effect (The current through the coil generates a magnetic field, which in turn sets the winding in motion. This movement induces voltages in the coil, which are added to the useful signal. The tighter the winding of the coil, the less the useful signal is distorted.)
